They were the best of times, and the worst of times.
My Community Group traveled to Ocracoke, NC over July 4th holiday and ate at a couple different places while we were there. I feel like we got the best the island had to offer... and unfortunately also the worst the island had to offer. Here are my reviews.

| see the mater on the side? not being eaten. |
Howards Pub. Delicious! There's not one bad thing I can say about this place. The atmosphere was fun and laid back, perfect for the beach. We had quick service from a friendly (though perhaps stoned) young waiter, there were plenty of choices for drinks (I went with two beer connoisseurs), my Carolina burger was probably the best burger I've ever eaten, and the prices are really reasonable- especially for a beach bar! If you go to Ocracoke, GO TO HOWARD'S PUB. I insist upon it.

| How we feel about Jolly Roger. |
Unfortunately, not all our Ocracoke dining experiences were this pleasurable. We chose The Jolly Roger because we could eat outside and we happened to have a dog with us, so there you go. We got to the restaurant and found seats fairly quickly. Lucky (or unlucky) for us, a table had just opened up. So we sit, us 3 girls order from the childrens menu, and the 2 boys ordered 1 ceasar salad and 1 fish sandwich. How long do you think it takes to get these meals together? 10 minutes? No, the place was pretty busy, lets give them a break. 20 minutes? Ok.. so they're really busy, and food takes time to cook even if it is just fries and chicken and some lettuce. 40 minutes? Well.. they're probably bringing it out any minute now. 50 minutes? I hope this is worth waiting for. 60 minutes? Bingo. ONE HOUR to get our food. But at least the waitress was friendly, attentive, and apologetic? Nope, nope, nope. But at least the food was worth the wait? Definitely not. My "cheese" fries had kraft shredded cheese not even melted on top of them. Why wouldn't the cheese melt? Because the fries were cold. Our chicken fingers had very little chicken. Clare's fried fish still had the SKIN on it. Paul's sandwich was gross, and Jake's salad was inedible. He took one bite. Since our food took a ridiculously long time to come, we asked for our check AS SOON as
Katie (must be said with disdain) finally brought our food.. we wanted to make it to Sweet Tooth for dessert before they closed! Well, food might take a long time to cook, but a check comes out right away, right? 10 minutes.. 20.. 30.. 40.. and by now we've got 5 minutes to get to Sweet Tooth. So Clare and I leave, drive to Sweet Tooth, GET dessert, and she leaves to go back to get the rest of the crew.. WHO STILL DON'T HAVE THE CHECKS! So ONE HOUR later they finally pay and get the heck out of there. If you go to Ocracoke, DO NOT EAT AT THE JOLLY ROGER! I insist upon it. The view may be pretty, but take my word for it, get food and bring it to the beach if you want a pretty sunset. The scenery is not worth putting up with the rest of the Jolly Roger's faults.
We also went to the coffee house (Ocracoke Coffee?) and Sweet Tooth. I recommend BOTH. The coffee house had these really delicious, completely worth the calories cinnamon buns! So good! And I had a Toffee Caramel Brownie at Sweet Tooth.. a bit overpriced, but we're on an island- caramel is hard to get, right?
There's the bare bones of it, mateys. Sorry (but not really) I can't offer any seafood recommendations. I'm sure its good what with Ocracoke being an island and all.. but I really couldn't weigh in on it. Well, the seafood might be good anywhere BUT Jolly Roger.
